When Pedestrian Crashes Are Most Likely to Happen
Pedestrian crashes do not spread evenly across the day or the calendar. They cluster in the late afternoon and early evening, when foot traffic overlaps with the commute home and light starts to fade. Fall months add another layer, since clocks and shrinking daylight push that overlap earlier into rush hour before drivers adjust their habits.
Weekends bring a different pattern. Foot traffic around shopping centers, farm stands, and other gathering spots increases, and parking lots and access roads see more vehicles moving slowly but making frequent stops, turns, and distracted glances. Crowded lots and driveways, where cars back out or cross walking paths, are a common setting for these crashes.
Weather and visibility matter too. Rain, glare, and dusk all cut down how quickly a driver can see someone stepping into a lane, and a pedestrian's reaction time shrinks just as fast. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 68,244 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head injuries, and damage to the knees, hips, or spine. Severity usually depends on vehicle speed and the location of the impact.
What usually causes pedestrian accidents?
Common factors include distracted driving, failure to yield at crosswalks or in parking areas, low visibility, and backing up without seeing someone behind them.
Does vehicle speed change the outcome for a pedestrian?
Yes. Lower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of any impact, which significantly affects whether injuries are minor or severe.
Where do most pedestrian accidents occur?
Many happen in parking lots, driveways, and other low-speed areas, as well as at intersections and crosswalks where vehicle and foot traffic cross paths.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Hampton Falls, NH
Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 right away and stay back unless it's safe to help. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation afterward is a good idea, since some injuries, like concussions or internal strains, do not show symptoms right away.
If you're able, note what you saw, including where people were standing or walking and how the vehicle was moving. Photos of the scene can help later. Cooperate with responding officers and give an accurate account, but let the investigation run its course rather than guessing at fault. Follow up with your own doctor if new symptoms appear in the days after the crash.
