Frequently Asked Questions
What should a cyclist do after a crash with another rider or a vehicle?
Stay at the scene, call 911 if anyone is hurt, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor. Exchange contact information and, if possible, note how and where the collision happened.
Do cyclists have the same rights to the road as drivers?
In New York, cyclists generally have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers, including staying in marked lanes and following the direction of travel on one-way bike lanes.
Are bicycle crashes more likely to happen at intersections or in bike lanes?
Many bicycle crashes occur at intersections where paths cross, but head-on collisions like this one can also happen within a bike lane when a rider travels against the marked direction.
What injuries are most common in bicycle crashes?
Head injuries, road rash, and fractures are common, since cyclists have little protection in a collision. Helmet use can reduce the severity of head trauma but doesn't eliminate the risk.
