Why Even Short-Term Road Closures Are Necessary After Crashes
Road closures following crashes, even for short periods, are often essential to allow emergency responders to safely assess injuries, manage damaged vehicles, and clear debris from the roadway. Highways like South Dakota Highway 11 can become hazardous if traffic continues to flow through an active crash scene.
Temporary closures also help protect both first responders and drivers from secondary collisions, which can occur when approaching motorists are unaware of sudden hazards ahead.
Drivers are encouraged to follow posted detours, remain patient, and exercise caution when traveling near emergency scenes to ensure everyone’s safety.
