HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Macomb County, Mich., Oct. 9, 2026 — Three people died after a boat crashed and capsized in Lake St. Clair near MacRay Harbor on Wednesday night, October 7, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office. The bodies were recovered from the submerged vessel early Thursday morning.

The sheriff's office said its dispatch center got a 911 call around 10:48 p.m. Wednesday after a passenger who had been aboard the boat swam to shore. That passenger reportedly told investigators the crash happened around 8 p.m. and that the boat flipped over in the water, leaving roughly three hours unaccounted for before anyone alerted authorities.

Marine Division deputies and the sheriff's office Underwater Search and Rescue Team spent the night searching the area. Crews located the submerged boat and recovered three people from it around 5 a.m. Thursday. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Footage of the boat being towed afterward reportedly showed heavy damage to the starboard side near the stern.

The investigation continues. We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased victims.

Where Boat Crashes on Lake St. Clair Tend to Happen

Boating accidents on busy inland lakes like Lake St. Clair often cluster in a few predictable settings: narrow channels near marinas, harbor entrances with heavy nighttime traffic, and open stretches of water where boats operate without the lane markings, signals, or speed limits that structure driving on roads. Harbor mouths and channel approaches force boats of different sizes and speeds into close quarters, often in low light, with few fixed reference points to judge distance or closing speed.

Darkness compounds the risk. Running lights can be hard to spot against shoreline lights, and many recreational boaters have limited experience reading other vessels' positions and headings at night. Wakes, wind chop, and limited visibility can turn a routine crossing into a fast-developing emergency, especially when a vessel suffers hull damage and takes on water quickly.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023. Boating accidents are tracked separately from roadway crashes, but they share common threads with crashes on undivided highways and unsignalled intersections: both tend to spike where paths cross without clear right-of-way rules and where operators have only seconds to react.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should someone do if they witness or survive a boat crash?

Call 911 or hail the Coast Guard or local marine patrol immediately, get everyone into life jackets if they aren't already wearing them, and try to stay with or near the vessel if it's safe to do so, since that makes rescuers' search easier.

What injuries are common in boat crashes?

Boat crashes can cause blunt-force trauma from collisions, drowning or near-drowning after a capsize, hypothermia in cold water, and injuries from being thrown against the hull or into the water.

What usually causes boat accidents like this one?

Common factors nationally include operator inexperience, limited visibility at night, excessive speed, alcohol use, and mechanical or structural failure, though the specific cause of any crash is determined only after investigators review the evidence.
