HAYWARD, Alameda County, Calif., Sept. 17, 2026 — Two people were taken to a hospital after a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday afternoon, September 16, on northbound I-880 near the Route 92 interchange in Hayward, according to authorities.

The crash was reported shortly after 1 p.m. on NB I-880 just south of Route 92, near Jackson Street, according to California Highway Patrol radio traffic. A gray sedan sustained major front-end damage, and a red pickup truck sustained moderate rear-end damage, indicating the vehicles collided in that order of impact.

Officers on scene initially described the collision as having no visible injuries but requested paramedics after finding at least one lane blocked, according to dispatch logs. The CHP later upgraded the call to a crash with minor injuries. Two people were reportedly evaluated for possible injuries and transported to Eden Medical Center, authorities said.

Tow trucks were called to remove both vehicles from the roadway. The Freeway Service Patrol assisted at the scene before closing out its portion of the response, according to dispatch records. No further details on the drivers or the cause of the crash have been released.

The circumstances that led to the collision remain under investigation. Authorities have not said whether speed, distraction, or another factor contributed.

We wish those injured a full recovery.

Where Multi-Vehicle Crashes Cluster on Freeway Interchanges

Freeway interchanges like the one where I-880 meets Route 92 tend to generate more crashes than open stretches of highway. Traffic merging, diverging, and weaving across several lanes over a short distance creates repeated points where vehicles must adjust speed quickly, and small misjudgments can lead to collisions.

Interchanges also concentrate different kinds of drivers moving at different speeds: some slowing to exit, some accelerating to merge, some simply passing through. That mix, combined with lane changes made under time pressure, is a common setup for rear-end and side-impact crashes similar to ones reported at busy interchanges statewide.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023, a reminder that people outside the vehicles involved, including those on foot or in smaller vehicles nearby, can also be affected by crashes that begin inside a car or truck. Interchange design, sightlines, and traffic volume all play a role in how often and how severely these crashes occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do right after a car accident?

Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, and call 911. Exchange information with the other driver and, if you're able to safely do so, take photos of the vehicles and the scene.

How do weather and road conditions affect crash risk?

Wet pavement, reduced visibility, and glare can all lengthen stopping distances and reduce reaction time, particularly near merges and interchanges where drivers already have less room to react.

Where do most traffic crashes happen?

A large share of crashes occur at or near intersections and interchanges, where vehicles cross paths, merge, or change speed in close proximity to one another.

What to Do After a Car Accident in Hayward, CA

If you're involved in a crash on a freeway in Hayward, try to move your vehicle out of traffic lanes if it's drivable and safe to do so. Turn on hazard lights and stay inside the vehicle if you're stopped in a live lane, since exiting near moving traffic carries its own risk.

Even if injuries seem minor, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since some injuries from a crash don't show symptoms right away. Keep a copy of the CHP incident report and any medical records in case you need them later. Reporting the crash promptly and documenting the scene can also help if questions come up afterward about how it happened.
