Frequently Asked Questions
How are fatal crashes like this one investigated?
Police typically document the scene, interview drivers and witnesses, and examine vehicle damage and roadway evidence to determine how the vehicles collided. In cases involving a death, specialized crash reconstruction units are often brought in.
How long do these investigations usually take?
Initial findings can come out within days, but a full investigation, including toxicology results and crash reconstruction, often takes several weeks to months before a final determination is made.
Does impairment play a role in broadside crashes at intersections?
It can, though it is not the only factor. Investigators generally also look at whether a driver ran a red light or stop sign, failed to yield, or was distracted before concluding what caused the crash.
Where do fatal crashes like this tend to happen?
Intersections where two roads cross at a right angle, like Long Beach Road and Windsor Parkway, are common sites for broadside, or "T-bone," collisions, since vehicles approach from directions where drivers may not see each other in time.
What to Do After a Broadside Collision in Hempstead, NY
If you're involved in a broadside collision, check yourself and any passengers for injuries before moving, and call 911 right away even if injuries seem minor. Some injuries, particularly to the neck, back or head, don't show symptoms immediately and are easier to treat the sooner they're caught.
Stay at the scene until police arrive and give them your account of what happened. If you're able, take photos of the vehicles, the intersection and any traffic signals or signs nearby. Get the contact information of any witnesses, since their accounts can matter later.
Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked out by a doctor within a day or two. Adrenaline can mask pain after a crash, and a medical record created soon afterward can be important if complications surface later.
