Henniker, NH (March 2, 2026) – A woman was injured early Saturday, February 28, when a block of ice crashed through a vehicle’s windshield on Route 202 under the Route 114 overpass in Henniker.
Authorities said the ice struck the windshield as the Kia SUV traveled beneath the bridge. The impact sent shattered glass into the passenger side, injuring the woman seated in the front.
The passenger was taken to a local hospital for treatment and later released. She reported ongoing pain and bruising to her chest, abdomen, face, and neck following the incident.
Police examined the overpass and the surrounding area to determine where the ice originated. Transportation officials later inspected the bridge and reported no ongoing hazard for drivers.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash. We extend our thoughts to those injured and wish them a full recovery.
How Falling Ice Can Create Roadway Hazards
During winter months, ice can build up on bridges, overpasses, and vehicles. As temperatures change, chunks of ice may break loose and fall onto traffic below.
When ice strikes a moving vehicle, the force can shatter glass and cause injuries. Even smaller pieces can create dangerous conditions if drivers swerve suddenly to avoid debris.
Overpasses may pose an added risk because vehicles travel both above and below. Ice can also fall from larger trucks if snow and frozen buildup are not cleared before travel.
