Where Red Light Intersection Crashes Concentrate
Crashes tied to red light violations tend to cluster at wide, high-volume intersections where multiple lanes of traffic move through on separate signal phases. Busy commercial corridors, the kind lined with turn lanes, shopping centers, and heavy commuter traffic, see this pattern repeat because drivers face long waits, shorter yellow phases relative to approach speed, and more opportunities to misjudge a light as it changes.
Intersections with high posted speeds are especially prone to this kind of crash. A driver approaching at 45 mph has less time to decide whether to stop than one approaching at 25 mph, and that compressed decision window is where many red light crashes originate.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 17 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred at intersections in 2023. Intersections draw concentrated risk not just for pedestrians but for vehicle occupants, since crossing traffic patterns create the conditions for high speed, right-angle impacts.
