HICKORY WITHE, Fayette County, Tenn., Oct. 7, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash involving at least two tractor-trailers closed eastbound Interstate 40 in Fayette County overnight on Tuesday, October 6. Two people were reportedly injured.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported the crash just after midnight on I-40 between the Gallaway-Oakland exit and the Covington-Somerville exit. All eastbound lanes were shut down following the wreck.
Photos from the scene showed one of the tractor-trailers on its side. A diversion route was put in place about 20 minutes after the crash was reported.
The cause of the crash has not been released and remains under investigation. It was not immediately confirmed how many vehicles were involved beyond the two tractor-trailers, or the extent of the injuries reported.
We wish those injured a full recovery.
Where Tractor-Trailer Crashes on Interstates Tend to Cluster
Large-truck crashes on interstates like I-40 often occur in stretches between exits, where traffic merges, speeds vary, and lane changes are more frequent. Long hauls through rural counties can also mean drivers cover many miles of flat, repetitive highway, which increases the risk of fatigue or delayed reaction time.
Overnight hours add another factor. Visibility drops, traffic thins out, and commercial drivers are more likely to be working through fatigue to meet delivery schedules. A single truck losing control or rolling onto its side can block multiple lanes and trap other vehicles behind it before anyone has time to react.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4 percent of large-truck drivers involved in fatal crashes had blood alcohol concentrations of .08 g/dL or higher in 2023. That figure points to the range of factors, from fatigue to mechanical failure to road conditions, that investigators typically examine after a crash like this one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does speed make a truck crash worse?
Yes. Higher speeds increase stopping distance and the force involved in any collision, which is especially significant for vehicles of the size and weight of tractor-trailers.
Why is distracted driving a particular risk around large trucks?
A moment of inattention near a semi leaves little time to react to sudden braking, lane changes, or a jackknifing trailer, given how much space trucks need to stop safely.
How do weather and road conditions factor into crashes like this?
Wet or uneven pavement, low visibility, and nighttime conditions can all extend stopping distances and make it harder for truck drivers to correct if a vehicle starts to drift or skid.
What should someone do immediately after a crash like this?
Move to a safe location if possible, call 911, and seek a medical evaluation even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. Documenting the scene and contacting the appropriate agency to file a report are also important early steps.
