HILLSDALE TWP, Winona County, Minn., Oct. 13, 2026 — A motorcyclist and his passenger were hurt on Sunday evening, October 11, when their Harley-Davidson and a Chevy Silverado collided on westbound Highway 14 near Quarry Hill Road, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The crash was reported at 7:20 p.m. on a dry roadway, the state patrol said. Investigators said the 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a 2011 Chevy Silverado were both traveling westbound on Highway 14 when the two vehicles made contact near the Quarry Hill Road area.

The motorcycle's driver, a 24-year-old Winona man, and his passenger, a 20-year-old Winona woman, were taken to Winona Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The passenger was wearing a seatbelt, according to the crash report, though investigators did not indicate whether the motorcycle driver was wearing a helmet. The driver of the Silverado, a 41-year-old Saint Charles man, was not injured, the state patrol said.

Winona County Sheriff's Office, Goodview Police Department and Winona Ambulance personnel responded to the scene along with state troopers. The state patrol listed the incident report as believed complete as of early Monday, October 12, though the exact cause of the collision has not been released.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

What Actually Cuts Down on Motorcycle and Vehicle Collisions on Rural Highways

Road design plays a bigger role in these crashes than many drivers realize. Wider shoulders, better sightlines at intersecting roads like Quarry Hill Road, and clear lane markings all give drivers and motorcyclists more time to notice each other and react. Rumble strips and improved signage near rural crossroads have also been shown to reduce lane-departure and merging crashes in which two vehicles end up in the same space.

Weather and road surface conditions change how much room a driver has to correct a mistake. Even on dry pavement, speed differences between a motorcycle and a pickup truck shrink the window either driver has to adjust before a crash becomes unavoidable. Wet, gravel-covered, or poorly lit stretches of highway further reduce that window, which is why agencies increasingly focus on resurfacing, lighting upgrades, and shoulder maintenance along crash-prone corridors.

Driver behavior still matters alongside infrastructure. Motorcyclists are smaller and harder to spot in a driver's mirrors or peripheral vision, so following distance and lane positioning make a real difference. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 1,947,298 passenger-vehicle occupants were injured in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023, a reminder that even routine highway travel carries real risk for everyone on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can drivers do to lower the chances of a crash like this?

Keeping a safe following distance, checking mirrors and blind spots before merging or turning, and slowing down near intersecting roads or driveways all help drivers react in time when another vehicle is close by.

What injuries are common in motorcycle and vehicle collisions?

Motorcyclists often suffer fractures, road rash, and head or neck injuries, even in crashes considered non-life-threatening. Vehicle occupants typically face a lower risk of serious injury due to the added protection provided by a car or truck's frame.

What usually causes crashes like this one?

Common factors include misjudged distances between vehicles, delayed reaction time, lane changes, or turning movements near intersections. Investigators typically review vehicle positioning, speed, and road conditions before determining a cause.

Does speed change how serious a crash turns out to be?

Yes. Higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to stop or steer away from a collision and increase the force involved when vehicles make contact, which raises the likelihood of serious injury.
