Phoenix, AZ (June 8, 2026) – A 16-month-old boy lost his life after being struck by a vehicle late Sunday night, June 7, near 31st Ave and Buckeye Rd in west Phoenix. The child, identified as Lupe Morales, was found in critical condition shortly before 9 p.m. and was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
According to prosecutors, 35-year-old Carlos Rojas Mora, described as the family’s neighbor and a Mexican national, was driving the vehicle involved. Investigators said the toddler wandered into the street while no one was watching him and was then hit during the collision.
Police stated that Mora left in another vehicle after the child was struck. He was later located and booked into the Maricopa County jail on a charge of hit-and-run involving death. Mora appeared before a judge on Monday afternoon. Detectives are still working to gather and review all facts surrounding what occurred.
We share our deepest sympathies with Lupe Morales’ family and those mourning this heartbreaking loss.
What Happens in a Hit-and-Run Death Investigation?
When a fatal hit-and-run is reported, investigators typically begin by collecting physical evidence from the roadway and examining any available surveillance footage. Witness statements can also help establish a timeline and identify the vehicle involved.
Vehicle damage, tire marks, and electronic data may provide additional details about how the accident unfolded. Investigators often compare these findings with information gathered from nearby businesses, homes, or traffic cameras.
In cases where a driver leaves before speaking with law enforcement, establishing movements before and after the incident can become a key part of the review. Records, video evidence, and forensic analysis are frequently used to help determine the sequence of actions and whether criminal charges are appropriate under state law.
