What Are the Legal Consequences of a Hit-and-Run Fatality in Oklahoma?
In Oklahoma, leaving the scene of a crash that results in death is a felony offense. Drivers involved in a collision are legally required to stop, provide assistance, and exchange information with other parties. Failing to do so when someone has been killed carries significantly heavier penalties than a standard hit-and-run involving only property damage.
Bicyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, and fatal hit-and-run crashes involving cyclists have drawn increased attention from lawmakers and traffic safety advocates in recent years. When a suspect vehicle is located after the fact, physical evidence such as paint transfer, front-end damage, and nearby surveillance footage can be used to establish a connection to the collision. Oklahoma courts treat leaving the scene of a fatal crash as a serious criminal matter.
