What Typically Happens During a Hit-and-Run Investigation After a Pedestrian Fatality
When a driver flees after fatally striking a pedestrian, investigators typically begin by canvassing for surveillance footage from nearby businesses, traffic cameras, and private properties. Witnesses in the area may also be interviewed in the hours and days that follow.
Physical evidence left at the scene, such as vehicle parts, paint transfer, or tire marks, can help narrow down the make and model of the vehicle involved. Forensic analysis of that evidence sometimes leads to a suspect even without a direct eyewitness. Tips from the public are also a major factor in these cases. People who saw something in the moments before or after a hit-and-run are often the fastest path to identifying who was behind the wheel.
