Why Do Hit-and-Run Crashes in Parking Lots Present Unique Challenges for Investigators?
Parking lots see a steady flow of vehicles coming and going, which can make it harder to pin down exactly which one was involved once a driver leaves the area. Unlike a roadway with a clear direction of travel, a fleeing vehicle in a lot has multiple possible exits.
Surveillance cameras from nearby businesses can be especially valuable in these cases, since a bank or retail location may have footage covering its parking area. Investigators typically request this kind of footage early, since it may capture the vehicle’s description or even a partial plate.
Witnesses who were also parking or walking nearby can provide additional details that help narrow down the search, even without seeing the exact moment of contact. Combining these sources is the most effective way to identify a vehicle that fled a parking lot crash.
