What Drivers Should Know About Hit-and-Run Crashes on California Freeways
In California, leaving the scene of a crash that involves injuries is a felony offense. Drivers involved in a collision are legally required to stop, provide their information, and render aid if someone is hurt. Failing to do so can result in significant prison time and fines, on top of any charges tied to the underlying crash.
Freeway hit-and-run cases can be particularly difficult to resolve quickly because they often happen in low-light conditions and at high speeds, limiting what witnesses are able to observe. However, traffic cameras, witness accounts, and vehicle debris left behind all help piece together what happened. In multi-vehicle freeway crashes, the presence of multiple witnesses and physical evidence from several cars often improves the chances of identifying a fleeing driver.
