What Should Drivers Do After a Pedestrian Collision?
Drivers involved in a pedestrian collision should stop immediately and remain at the location. Leaving before providing information or assistance can make it harder for the injured person to receive help and can create additional legal consequences. Drivers should also follow instructions from emergency personnel on site.
Pedestrians face greater risks than people inside vehicles because they have little physical protection. Visibility can be especially important at night, when darkness, clothing, weather, and roadway lighting can affect how easily a person is seen. Drivers should reduce speed when visibility is limited and watch carefully at intersections and crossings.
After a pedestrian wreck, available evidence can help establish what happened. Investigators may review vehicle damage, roadway markings, lighting, surveillance footage, and witness accounts. These details can help determine the vehicle’s movements and identify a driver who left without stopping.
