HOLLY RIDGE, Onslow County, N.C., Oct. 2, 2026 — A pedestrian died Friday, October 2, after being struck by a dump truck on Old Folkstone Road near U.S. 17, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Two dump trucks were involved in the crash, troopers said.
Highway Patrol told reporters at the scene that one of the two dump trucks struck the pedestrian, who died at the scene. The pedestrian's name has not been released.
No charges have been filed as of Friday, and the crash remains under investigation. The circumstances that led the truck to strike the pedestrian have not been detailed publicly.
Old Folkstone Road was blocked for several hours near Heritage Christian Academy and Tar Landing Road, forcing drivers onto alternate routes. The road was expected to stay closed while crews towed the dump trucks from the scene, troopers said.
Highway Patrol and the Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash.
We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.
Why Pedestrian Crashes Happen Where Trucks and Foot Traffic Mix
A pedestrian struck by a truck is rarely the result of one clear mistake. More often it's a gap in attention on both sides that closes at the wrong moment. A driver glances at a mirror, a dashboard, or a blind spot created by a long hood and high cab. A pedestrian steps off a shoulder or crosses a driveway assuming the truck has already seen them. By the time either one notices the other, there's no room left to stop or swerve.
Dump trucks and other heavy work vehicles add a specific problem: limited sightlines near the front and sides, long stopping distances, and routes that often run through areas with no sidewalks or marked crossings. On rural roads like those near Holly Ridge, pedestrians often walk along the shoulder because there's no separated path, putting them closer to traffic than they would be in town.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian deaths accounted for 18 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2023. That figure reflects how often the same pattern repeats: a moment where neither driver nor pedestrian clocks the other in time to act.
Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal trauma. Severity usually depends on the size of the vehicle and how fast it was moving at impact.
What typically causes pedestrian accidents?
Common factors include distracted driving or walking, poor visibility, failure to yield, and roads without sidewalks or crosswalks separating foot traffic from vehicles.
How much does vehicle speed affect a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Survival rates drop sharply as speed increases. Pedestrians struck at lower speeds are far more likely to survive than those hit by vehicles traveling at higher speeds, where injuries become more severe.
Where do most pedestrian accidents occur?
Many happen on roads without sidewalks or marked crossings, especially where pedestrians share the shoulder with vehicle traffic, including trucks and other heavy equipment.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Holly Ridge, NC
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 immediately and avoid moving an injured person unless they're in further danger. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation is important, since some injuries like internal bleeding or concussions aren't immediately obvious.
It's important that you stay at the scene until law enforcement arrives and provide an honest account of what you saw. If you're a witness, write down details while they're fresh, including the time, location, and any vehicles involved. For families affected by a pedestrian death, requesting a copy of the official crash report once it's released can help clarify what happened and what the investigation ultimately finds.
