Frequently Asked Questions
Why do multi-vehicle crashes like this happen?
They often start with one vehicle slowing or stopping suddenly, whether for traffic, a lane change, or a mechanical issue, and following vehicles don't have enough space or time to react before impact.
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a chain-reaction crash?
Keeping extra distance from the vehicle ahead, especially near on-ramps, merges, and overpasses where traffic bunches up, gives more time to brake or steer clear if something happens up front.
What should I do if I come up on a crash blocking the freeway?
Slow down well before the scene, turn on hazard lights to warn traffic behind you, and move into an open lane if it's safe to do so. Avoid stopping in a travel lane unless directed by responders.
What to Do After a Bus Crash in Honolulu, Hawaii
If you're involved in or near a crash involving a school bus, check on children and other passengers first, since injuries aren't always obvious right away. Even if someone declines treatment at the scene, it's worth getting checked by a doctor in the following day or two, since adrenaline can mask pain from whiplash or soft-tissue injuries. Get contact information for other drivers and any witnesses, and ask for a copy of the police report once it's filed. If you're a parent whose child was on an affected bus, follow up with the school district about any incident report, and keep records of any medical visits connected to the crash.
