What Cuts Deadly Crash Numbers: Road Design and Driver Behavior Together
Fatal crashes rarely come down to one cause. Engineers who study roads like Tanner Road often find that a mix of lighting, sightlines, and traffic signal timing shapes how survivable a crash turns out to be, long before any one driver's choices enter the picture. Adding turn lanes, better street lighting, or median barriers has been shown to cut both the number and severity of crashes at problem corridors.
Impairment remains one of the clearest predictors of whether a crash turns deadly. A driver with alcohol or drugs in their system reacts slower, misjudges distance and speed, and is far less likely to correct a mistake before impact. That raises the odds a crash kills someone.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one person was killed every 13 minutes in traffic crashes in 2023. Communities that pair road improvements, such as roundabouts or protected turn signals, with stronger enforcement against impaired driving tend to see that toll drop over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Speed, impairment, lack of seat belt use, and the angle or force of impact all play a role. Road design, including lighting and intersection layout, also affects outcomes.
How does speed affect whether someone survives a crash?
Higher speed means more force at impact and less time for a driver to react or brake. Even a small increase in speed can sharply raise the chance of serious or fatal injury.
Why does seat belt use matter so much?
Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown from the vehicle or against the interior during a collision, which is one of the main reasons unbelted occupants face a much higher risk of dying in a crash.
What should a family do after a fatal crash?
Families can request a copy of the official crash report from the investigating agency once it's released and can contact the agency directly with questions about the investigation's status.
