Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to watch for motorcycles?
Motorcycles are smaller and can be hidden in blind spots or behind other vehicles, so drivers should check mirrors and blind spots twice, especially before turning or changing lanes, and give extra space at intersections.
What should a rider do after a motorcycle crash?
If possible, move to a safe location, call 911, and get a medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries, like internal bleeding or concussions, aren't obvious right away. Getting a copy of the police report is also important for insurance and records.
Are motorcycle crashes more common at intersections?
Many motorcycle collisions happen at intersections, often because a driver turning left fails to see an oncoming rider or misjudges their speed and distance.
How does the road surface affect motorcycle safety?
Motorcycles have less contact with the road than cars, so gravel, wet pavement, potholes, and painted lane markings can affect traction and control far more than they would for a car or truck.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Houston, TX
Anyone involved in or witness to a motorcycle crash in Houston should call 911 right away and wait for police and medical responders. Riders and drivers should exchange contact and insurance information when it's safe to do so, and take photos of the scene if possible. Even if a rider feels fine after a crash, a medical check is a good idea, since adrenaline can mask pain or injury. Keeping a copy of the police report and any medical records can help later with insurance claims.
