Frequently Asked Questions
Does vehicle speed matter in pedestrian crashes?
Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to stop and increase the force of impact, which raises the likelihood of severe or fatal injury to a pedestrian.
Where do pedestrian crashes usually happen?
They frequently occur on wide arterial roads, freeway frontage roads and intersections with limited lighting or crosswalks, especially where foot traffic crosses high-speed lanes.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Low-light hours, including early morning and late evening, see a higher share of pedestrian crashes, largely because visibility is reduced for both drivers and pedestrians.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being hit by a vehicle?
If possible, call 911, stay as still as safe, and wait for emergency responders. Getting a medical evaluation quickly is important even if injuries initially seem minor.
