You can buy a Louisiana State Police crash report online through the LSP crash report portal at crashreports.dps.la.gov for $11.50 plus $2.50 and 2.5%, once 15 working days have passed since the crash.

Fatal crash reports are the exception, since they can only be bought in person at a local Troop Office.

Who Can Buy a Louisiana State Police Crash Report?

LSP receives requests for report copies from the public, insurance companies and attorneys. Its Traffic Records Unit is the central processing location for all crashes handled by Louisiana State Police and the Department of Public Safety. Copies are available online and at each Troop, so you do not need a lawyer or insurer to order your own.

If a city police department or parish sheriff’s office handled your crash, you should ask that agency how it releases reports. More help for drivers across the state is collected on our Louisiana accident resources page.

What to Have Ready Before You Buy

Louisiana State Patrol asks you to allow 15 working days after the crash before you request a report or photographs.

The LSP Crash Report Request Form shows the details State Police use to identify a crash. Gather what you can:

  • Date of the crash
  • Location of the crash, including the highway number
  • Parish
  • Troop
  • Name of a driver
  • Crash report number, if the trooper gave you one

The form notes that a vehicle number is not required to get a copy of a crash report. Fill in what you know, even if a detail or two is missing.

Buying Your Louisiana State Police Crash Report Online, Step by Step

Here is how the online purchase works, from waiting period to printed copy.

  1. Count 15 working days from the date of the crash.
  2. Open the purchase link on the LSP Traffic Records Unit page, which leads to crashreports.dps.la.gov.
  3. Find your report using the crash details you gathered.
  4. Pay by card. The online portal lists Visa, MasterCard and American Express credit or debit cards.
  5. Print your PDF. Once checkout is complete, you can print a PDF copy of the report.

Read the report as soon as you print it, and check names, vehicle details and the crash location. If something looks wrong, ask the Troop that worked the crash how it makes corrections.

Louisiana Fatal Crash Reports Require a Troop Office Visit

According to LSP, fatal crash reports can only be purchased in person at a local Troop Office. We know that visit can be hard for a grieving family, so it may help to bring someone along and gather the details first.

At a Troop, you will be asked to submit the Crash Request Form with your purchase. Bring the crash date, location, parish and driver name you gathered earlier, since the form asks for them. The same in-person option is open for any crash, not only fatal ones.

The form has three parts. Section I is the request for the crash report, Section II covers additional crash information, and Section III is for photographs, only if you need them. Personal checks and cash are not accepted at Troop locations, so bring an accepted form of payment.

Where you buy How you can pay Price LSP lists
Online portal Visa, MasterCard or American Express $11.50 plus $2.50 + 2.5%
Troop Office Certified check, company check or money order $16.50
Troop Office Credit card $16.50 plus $2.50 + 2.5%

Adding Crash Photos to Your Louisiana Report

Photos can be a big help in understanding what happened. Crash photos can be downloaded online when you buy the report online.

You can also request photos from the LSP Traffic Records-Photo Lab. Those requests must go directly through the Photo Lab, using Sections I and III of the Crash Report Request Form.

Send the completed form by mail, fax or email:

  • Mail: Louisiana State Police, Traffic Records-Photo Lab, PO Box 66614 (Box A-27), Baton Rouge, LA 70896
  • Fax: (225) 925-4922
  • Email: [email protected]

For fatality crashes, LSP requires a 60-day wait before photo requests can be submitted.
