Where Pedestrian Crashes Tend to Cluster on Texas Roadways
Pedestrian crashes are not spread evenly across a city's streets. They concentrate on wide, high-speed arterial roads, the multi-lane highways and bypass corridors built to move cars quickly through commercial strips, where crosswalks are often far apart and drivers are not expecting someone on foot. Long, straight stretches with few marked crossings tend to produce more serious outcomes because people crossing mid-block have farther to travel and less protection than they would at a signaled intersection.
Unsignalized intersections and roadway sections with limited lighting add to the risk, especially after dark or in early morning hours when visibility is lower. On-ramps and frontage roads near bypasses can also be trouble spots, since drivers merging or accelerating are focused on traffic flow rather than pedestrians at the roadside.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 68,244 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2023. That volume reflects how often these roads, built primarily for vehicle movement, are also used by people walking, whether out of necessity or because safer crossing options are not nearby.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In Texas, pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks at intersections, but drivers and pedestrians both carry responsibility for watching traffic signals and checking for oncoming vehicles before crossing.
What injuries are most common in pedestrian crashes?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal injuries, since there is no structure protecting them the way a vehicle frame does. Severity typically rises with vehicle speed.
What are common causes of pedestrian accidents?
Frequent factors include driver distraction, failure to yield at crossings, low visibility conditions, and speeding on roads with few marked crosswalks.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Humble, TX
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 immediately so emergency responders and law enforcement can reach the scene. Avoid moving an injured person unless they are in immediate danger, and wait for paramedics to assess any injuries, even ones that seem minor at first.
Cooperate with the responding constable deputies or officers and provide a clear account of what you saw. If you're a bystander, staying out of the roadway and giving responders space helps keep the scene safe for everyone. Anyone involved should also seek a medical evaluation promptly, since some injuries, particularly head or internal injuries, may not show symptoms right away.
