HURT, Pittsylvania County, Va., Oct. 18, 2026 — One person suffered severe injuries in a head-on crash Friday afternoon, October 16, on Main Street in Hurt, according to Gretna Fire & Rescue. Other people involved were also treated at the scene, officials said.

Gretna Fire & Rescue said its crews were called in to help the Hurt Fire Department respond to the crash, reported around 3 p.m. Friday. Responders arriving on Main Street found a head-on collision with one occupant trapped inside a vehicle, the agency said.

The trapped patient was described as severely injured, according to the report. Crews worked to free that person from the wreckage before transport, though further details on the extrication or hospital transport were not released.

Additional people hurt in the crash were also evaluated by responders on scene, Gretna Fire & Rescue said. Their conditions have not been made public.

The crash remains under investigation, and no cause has been released. It is not yet known how many vehicles were involved beyond the two in the head-on impact described by fire officials.

We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do weather and road conditions affect crash risk?

Wet pavement, poor visibility, and road design can all make it harder for drivers to react in time, especially on two-lane roads where head-on crashes are more likely. Conditions at the time of this crash have not been released.

What should someone do right after a car accident?

Call 911, check for injuries, and stay put if it's safe to do so until responders arrive. Even if injuries seem minor, it's wise to get checked out, since some injuries (like whiplash or internal trauma) aren't obvious right away.

Where do most traffic crashes happen?

A large share of serious crashes occur on rural or two-lane roads, where higher speeds and narrower margins between opposing lanes of traffic raise the odds of a head-on collision.
