Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head injuries, spinal damage, and internal injuries, since there is little to absorb the force of impact. Severity usually depends on vehicle speed and where the person is hit.
What usually causes pedestrian accidents?
Common factors include drivers failing to yield at crosswalks, distracted driving, poor visibility at night, and pedestrians crossing outside marked crossing areas. Busy commercial roads with multiple driveways, like many stretches of Route 9, can add risk.
Does vehicle speed change the odds of survival?
Yes. Lower speeds give drivers more time to react and reduce the force of any impact, which generally improves a pedestrian's chances of survival and recovery.
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many occur along commercial corridors and intersections where foot traffic crosses paths with turning or through vehicles, especially in areas with retail stores, restaurants, and parking lot entrances.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Hyde Park, NY
Anyone involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash should call 911 right away so police and medical help can respond. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's wise to get checked by a medical professional, since some injuries, like internal bleeding or concussions, aren't obvious right away. If you're a witness, staying at the scene to give a statement to police can help investigators piece together what happened. Keeping a copy of the police report and any medical records can also help later, whether for insurance purposes or follow-up care. For residents of Hyde Park, being extra cautious near shopping plazas and fast food locations along busy roads can help prevent similar incidents.
