Craighead County, AR (May 29, 2026) – One person died, and another was injured following a multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday afternoon, May 27, on US Highway 49 in a rural area of Craighead County.

The crash happened at about 2:13 p.m. during rainy conditions with wet roadway surfaces. Investigators said a 2015 Dodge Charger traveling westbound hydroplaned and crossed the centerline, striking an eastbound Nissan Rogue.

After the initial collision, the Charger left the roadway and overturned. Two additional eastbound vehicles, a Jeep Grand Wagoneer and a Ram 1500, struck debris from the first impact.

The driver of the Dodge Charger, identified as 41-year-old Taylor Dobbins of Jonesboro, was pronounced dead. A second driver, 44-year-old Penny Spaulding of Jonesboro, was injured and taken to St. Bernard’s Regional Medical Center.

The weather at the time included rain, and officials noted wet road conditions contributed to the chain-reaction crash. No additional details have been released. The investigation into the multi-vehicle highway collision remains ongoing.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Taylor Dobbins and wish the injured driver a full recovery.

Why Hydroplaning Crashes Can Escalate Quickly on Wet Highways

Hydroplaning occurs when a vehicle’s tires lose contact with the road surface due to standing water, reducing traction and steering control. This can cause a driver to unintentionally drift into opposing lanes or off the roadway.

On multi-lane highways, a single loss of control can quickly involve additional vehicles, especially when debris spreads across active traffic lanes. Drivers following behind may have little time to react to sudden obstacles.

Rain and wet pavement significantly increase stopping distances and reduce overall vehicle stability. Investigators usually examine weather conditions, tire marks, and vehicle damage patterns to determine how hydroplaning and secondary impacts contributed to the severity of the crash.
