VERNON TOWNSHIP, Jackson County, Ind., Oct. 18, 2026 — A four-vehicle crash involving two commercial trucks closed southbound Interstate 65 in Jackson County Saturday afternoon, October 17. One driver was seriously hurt, Indiana State Police said.
Troopers with the ISP Versailles Post were sent to the scene around 4:15 p.m. Saturday, according to Sgt. Stephen Wheeles. The crash happened on I-65 southbound between Seymour and Crothersville, in Vernon Township.
Investigators believe a commercial vehicle failed to slow down for traffic backed up by construction before striking the other vehicles. Four vehicles were involved in all, two of them commercial trucks.
The driver of a passenger vehicle suffered serious injuries. All southbound lanes of I-65 were shut down following the crash.
The case remains under investigation. We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do large trucks need so much distance to stop?
Fully loaded commercial trucks can weigh 20 to 30 times more than a passenger car, and that added weight means they need much longer braking distances, especially when traffic ahead slows suddenly, such as near construction.
What makes crashes involving commercial trucks more dangerous than typical car accidents?
The size and weight difference between a truck and a passenger vehicle means the smaller vehicle absorbs most of the force in a collision, which often leads to more serious injuries for car occupants.
What are a truck's blind spots, and why do they matter in a crash like this?
Large trucks have wide blind spots along both sides, behind the trailer, and directly in front of the cab. Vehicles in those zones may not be visible to the driver, which can play a role in multi-vehicle pileups on highways.
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partially or fully beneath a truck's trailer during a collision, often because the trailer sits higher off the ground than a car's bumper or frame.
What to Do After a Commercial Truck Crash in Vernon Township, Indiana
Anyone involved in a crash on a highway like I-65 should move to a safe location if possible and call 911 right away. Even injuries that seem minor at first, such as neck or back pain, should be checked by a medical provider, since some symptoms take hours or days to appear. It's also a good idea to get the police report number and document the scene with photos if it's safe to do so. If a commercial vehicle was involved, note the company name and truck number visible on the vehicle, as this information can be useful later. Give yourself time to recover and follow up with a doctor if new symptoms develop after the initial evaluation.
