SAGINAW, Saginaw County, Mich., Sept. 16, 2026 — A two-vehicle crash left one person injured on Monday afternoon, September 14, on I-96 near Morse Lake Road, according to state police. The crash was reported at about 5:40 p.m.
Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicates a car was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when it crossed the median, went through the cable barriers, and entered the westbound lanes. There, it reportedly struck a pickup truck.
The driver of the car, described as a 17-year-old male from Grand Rapids, was taken to a hospital in Grand Rapids with head injuries. The driver of the pickup, a 22-year-old male from Hudsonville, was not injured, according to the police.
State police said the investigation into the crash is ongoing and that speed and reckless driving are being looked at as factors. No charges have been announced.
Troopers were on scene working to clear the crash, and authorities said drivers should expect slow traffic in the area and should allow extra time or use caution when passing through.
We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.
When Median Crossover Crashes Happen
Crashes where a vehicle crosses the median into oncoming lanes tend to cluster around commute hours, when traffic is heavier, and speeds vary widely between lanes. Early evening, as daylight fades and drivers are eager to get home, is a common window for these events on interstate corridors.
Speed plays an outsized role. A vehicle traveling well above the flow of traffic has less time to correct if it drifts, and a driver who overcorrects can send a car across a narrow median before barriers have a chance to catch it. Cable and guardrail systems are designed to slow or stop crossover vehicles, but they are not guaranteed to hold every vehicle at every speed.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, passenger vehicles made up 92 percent of registered vehicles and 89 percent of vehicle miles traveled in 2023. That volume means most crossover and highway crashes nationally involve ordinary passenger cars and light trucks rather than commercial vehicles, which shapes how investigators and highway engineers approach barrier design and speed enforcement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do immediately after a car accident?
Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, call 911, and wait for police to arrive and document the scene. Avoid discussing fault while facts are still being established.
Where do most traffic accidents happen?
Crashes are common on high-speed roads like interstates and highways, especially near interchanges, curves, and areas where traffic merges or speeds vary between lanes.
How can drivers reduce their crash risk?
Keeping speed consistent with traffic flow, maintaining following distance, and staying alert during commute hours and low-light conditions all help drivers respond in time when something goes wrong.
What injuries are most common in car accidents?
Head, neck, and chest injuries are frequently reported in serious highway crashes, particularly in high-speed collisions or crossover impacts.
What to Do After a Median Crossover Crash in Grand Rapids, MI
If you're involved in or witness a crash like this near Grand Rapids, stay in your vehicle if it's unsafe to exit, and move to the shoulder only if you can do so safely.
