What Can Lead to Wrong-Way Crashes on Highways?
Wrong-way crashes often occur when a driver enters a highway from the wrong ramp or becomes disoriented while driving. These incidents are especially dangerous because vehicles are moving in opposite directions at high speeds.
Early morning hours can increase the risk due to lower visibility and reduced traffic, which may delay recognition of a wrong-way vehicle. Fatigue or confusion can also affect a driver’s ability to navigate properly.
Highway design, signage, and lighting all play a role in preventing these crashes. Clear markings and driver awareness are key factors in reducing the likelihood of head-on collisions on major roadways.
