Imperial County, CA (May 12, 2026) – Multiple people were killed following a two-vehicle crash Sunday night on northbound State Route 86 near Red Earth.
Emergency units responded around 8:28 p.m. to reports of a collision involving a white Kia and a black SUV. Initial reports indicated the vehicles were involved in a head-on crash, with debris and multiple occupants affected in the northbound lanes.
Authorities confirmed that at least one person was found unconscious on the roadway, while additional occupants were reported with injuries at the scene. Early information indicated multiple fatal and serious injury outcomes, though the exact number of victims has not yet been fully confirmed.
The crash prompted a full closure of the northbound lanes while emergency crews worked the scene. Traffic backups extended for miles as vehicles were diverted and lanes were later partially reopened during the overnight response.
The identities of those involved have not been released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased.
What Investigators Review After Multi-Vehicle Head-On Crashes
Head-on crashes are among the most severe types of roadway collisions due to the combined impact forces from both directions. These incidents often result in significant vehicle damage and can involve multiple occupants with varying levels of injury.
Investigators typically examine lane positions, tire marks, and vehicle rest locations to determine how each vehicle entered the collision path. In cases involving multiple occupants, scene documentation helps clarify seating positions and injury severity.
Traffic conditions and driver movement leading up to the crash are also reviewed. When incidents occur on divided highways or rural routes, limited escape space and exposure to oncoming traffic can increase crash severity.
