Indianapolis, IN (January 26, 2026) – A devastating mobile home fire on the south side of Indianapolis claimed the life of an 80-year-old man early on Monday morning, according to officials with the Indianapolis Fire Department.
Crews were dispatched to the 4600 block of Matthews Way around 1:25 a.m. on January 26 after reports of a working mobile home fire with possible entrapment. Upon arrival, firefighters found the trailer fully engulfed in flames and partially collapsed just minutes later at 1:32 a.m.
Shortly after, crews reported hearing live ammunition igniting from within the home at approximately 1:40 a.m. The blaze was brought under control by 1:51 a.m. Tragically, the body of the elderly male victim was discovered at 2:08 a.m. during search operations.
In addition to the human loss, one dog and one cat were also found deceased at the scene. Officials confirmed that no smoke alarms were located within the structure.
The fire marks the second fire-related fatality in Indianapolis in 2026. Investigators continue to examine the cause of the blaze.
