Why Multi-Vehicle Freeway Crashes Can Be More Complex
Collisions involving three or more vehicles usually require a more detailed review because several drivers, vehicle positions, and traffic conditions may be involved. Investigators typically examine roadway evidence, vehicle damage, witness statements, and available camera footage to determine how the sequence unfolded.
On busy freeways, blocked travel lanes can quickly lead to congestion and increase the chance of secondary collisions. Drivers approaching a crash site are generally encouraged to slow down, maintain a safe following distance, and follow temporary traffic controls. As damaged vehicles are removed and the roadway is cleared, traffic usually returns to normal, although the collision review may continue after the scene has reopened.
