Why Overlap and Under-Run Collisions Can Be Dangerous
Crashes where one vehicle becomes partially lodged under another mostly occur in intersection or angle-impact collisions. These incidents can increase the risk of injury due to the way force is transferred between vehicles.
Even when entrapment does not occur, responders may still need to carefully stabilize vehicles and assess occupants for hidden injuries. Factors such as vehicle size differences, speed at impact, and roadway design can all contribute to the severity of these crashes. Emergency crews typically prioritize rapid assessment and safe extrication procedures when needed.
