Costa Mesa, CA (August 2, 2026) – Injuries were reported following a three-vehicle collision on northbound State Route 55 at Baker Street in Costa Mesa on July 31

According to California Highway Patrol dispatch information, the crash was first reported at about 4:10 p.m. Initial reports indicated a silver Lexus RX350, a white vehicle, and, later, a black Cadillac Escalade were involved. The collision blocked the right lane of northbound SR-55 near Baker Street, affecting traffic in the area.

Emergency units were called to the roadway after the report was upgraded from unknown injuries to an injury-related crash. Dispatch logs later noted that three vehicles were involved. One SUV and another passenger vehicle sustained major front-end damage, while the SUV also had significant rear-end damage. Tow trucks were requested to remove the damaged vehicles from the highway.

The cause of the crash remains under review as additional details continue to emerge.

We hope those who were hurt make a full and speedy recovery.

Why Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes Can Become More Complex

Crashes involving three or more vehicles usually require a longer investigation because several drivers, vehicle positions, and roadway conditions must be reviewed. Traffic volume, sudden braking, limited following distance, and lane changes can all contribute to chain-reaction collisions on busy highways.

Investigators typically examine vehicle damage, roadway markings, witness statements, and available camera footage to better understand how the sequence unfolded. Even when injuries appear to be minor, medical evaluations may reveal issues that were not immediately obvious. Clearing damaged vehicles from travel lanes is also an important step in restoring normal traffic flow and reducing the risk of secondary collisions. As more information becomes available, official reports may provide a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding a multi-vehicle highway crash.
