What Can Happen When Several Vehicles Crash on a Freeway?
Multi-vehicle crashes can develop quickly when traffic is moving at freeway speeds. A sudden stop can leave drivers with little time to avoid vehicles ahead.
Following distance is especially important on busy highways. Leaving enough space between vehicles gives drivers additional time to brake or change lanes when traffic slows unexpectedly.
Drivers should also check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes. Staying focused on traffic several vehicles ahead can provide an earlier warning of congestion or stopped vehicles.
When lanes become blocked, drivers should reduce speed and follow posted traffic directions. Avoiding distractions can help motorists recognize changing traffic conditions sooner.
