What Makes Multi-Vehicle Crashes Especially Dangerous?
Multi-vehicle crashes can become more serious when several vehicles are traveling close together. A sudden stop or overturned vehicle may leave following drivers with little time to react.
Large trucks can create additional hazards because of their size and weight. When a truck overturns, it may block multiple lanes and create obstacles for other motorists.
Drivers should maintain a safe following distance and watch several vehicles ahead when traffic is moving quickly. Reducing speed when approaching stopped traffic can also provide more time to react.
Freeway drivers should remain alert for sudden lane closures and changing traffic patterns. Avoiding distractions is particularly important when traveling near congested or obstructed lanes.
