How Can Drivers Improve Safety at Rural Road Intersections?
Intersections outside busy urban areas can still present significant driving challenges. Roads may have fewer traffic controls, limited lighting, or vegetation and other features that make approaching vehicles harder to see. Drivers should slow down when approaching an intersection and scan carefully in both directions before proceeding.
Turning vehicles can create additional conflicts when two roads meet at an angle or when sight distances are limited. You should make sure the path is clear before turning and remain alert for vehicles that may be approaching from an unexpected direction. Maintaining a controlled speed can provide more time to respond if another vehicle enters the intersection.
Nighttime and low-light conditions can make these challenges more pronounced. Make sure to use headlights appropriately and avoid distractions that could prevent them from noticing changes in traffic. Leaving enough space between vehicles also gives motorists additional time to brake when traffic slows unexpectedly.
