Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Lead to Long Traffic Delays
Multi-vehicle crashes can create significant traffic problems, especially on busy highways during daytime travel hours. When several vehicles block lanes at the same time, traffic flow may slow for miles in both directions. Even after damaged vehicles are removed, backups can continue because traffic takes time to return to normal speeds.
Highways with heavy commuter traffic are especially vulnerable to long delays after a collision. Drivers changing lanes suddenly, slowing without warning, or trying to avoid debris can increase congestion even farther from the original roadway blockage. Secondary traffic problems may also develop nearby, particularly when disabled vehicles or loose parts remain along the highway. Early reports following these types of crashes often focus on road conditions and travel delays before more information becomes available about those involved.
