Los Altos Hills, CA (July 21, 2026) – A traffic collision resulting in minor injuries was reported on Monday morning, July 20, along southbound I-280 near the Foothill Expressway off-ramp in Los Altos Hills.

Initial dispatch information indicated that a black Dodge Challenger came to rest on the right-hand shoulder after striking a center divider. A black Ford Mustang also spun out, left the roadway, and traveled approximately 40 feet down an embankment, where it sustained front-end damage. One vehicle was reported facing perpendicular to the roadway.

Emergency units arrived to assist those involved and assess the situation. Tow truck services were requested to recover the damaged Ford from the embankment, and the No. 4 southbound lane was temporarily blocked while crews removed the vehicle. Dispatch records later updated the call from unknown injuries to a minor injury collision.

The cause of the collision remains under review as more information becomes available.

We hope those who were hurt make a full and speedy recovery.

What Can Cause Vehicles to Leave the Road During a Highway Collision?

Vehicles can leave the roadway for many reasons during a highway crash, including sudden steering corrections, loss of traction, excessive speed for conditions, or attempts to avoid another vehicle. When a car travels onto a shoulder or down an embankment, recovery can become more complex due to uneven terrain and the need for specialized towing equipment. Damage beneath the vehicle or to roadside features may also require additional inspection before traffic fully returns to normal.

Even when injuries are described as minor, medical evaluations are common because symptoms, such as neck pain or soft-tissue injuries, may not become apparent for hours after the collision. Highway crashes can also create temporary lane closures while damaged vehicles are safely removed and the roadway is cleared.
