Killeen, TX (June 11, 2026) – One person was hurt following a five-vehicle crash on Wednesday afternoon, June 10, along the westbound lanes of I-14 near the Jasper Rd overpass in Killeen.
According to an initial report, the pileup happened around 12:41 p.m. Investigators said a Toyota Camry made an unsafe lane change and struck a Nissan Rogue, causing traffic to slow suddenly along the highway.
The chain reaction involved a Kia K4, Volkswagen Atlas, and Hyundai Elantra. After the vehicles came to a stop, the Hyundai caught fire in the engine compartment. Emergency units quickly extinguished the flames before they spread further.
The driver of the Nissan was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries. Everyone else involved was evaluated along the roadway and did not require additional treatment.
Traffic was reduced to one lane for a period as crews worked to clear the highway. All lanes have since reopened. Further details about the crash were not immediately available. Investigators are still working to determine all contributing factors behind the pileup.
We hope the injured driver makes a full and speedy recovery.
What Often Causes Multi-Vehicle Highway Pileups?
Multi-vehicle highway crashes can happen quickly, especially during heavy traffic or sudden lane changes. When one driver brakes unexpectedly, nearby vehicles may not have enough distance to stop safely. This can lead to a chain reaction involving several cars within seconds.
Unsafe lane changes are among the most common factors linked to highway pileups. Drivers may misjudge traffic speed, fail to check blind spots, or move between lanes without enough space. Congested travel lanes can make these situations even more dangerous.
Road conditions, distracted driving, and following too closely may also contribute to larger highway crashes. In some cases, secondary problems such as engine fires or blocked travel lanes can create additional risks for motorists nearby. Traffic backups after these collisions can last for hours while crews remove vehicles and inspect the roadway.
