Where School Bus Crashes Tend to Happen
School bus collisions cluster around the ordinary moments of a route: stops along two-lane roads, unsignalled intersections near schools, and the brief window when a bus is loading or unloading. These are low-speed settings on paper, but they put a bus broadside or stopped in a traffic lane, which raises the odds that a passing or approaching vehicle misjudges the situation.
Rural and suburban routes like those common in townships add another layer. Stop-arm violations happen more commonly on roads without a center turn lane or a signal to slow approaching traffic, and visibility can be limited by curves, hills, or intersections that lack full sightlines. A crash at a cross street, rather than at a marked stop, usually involves a car and bus moving through the same intersection at the same time.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,079 people were killed in school-transportation-related traffic crashes from 2014 through 2023. Most of those killed nationally in these crashes are occupants of vehicles other than the bus itself, not the students the bus is carrying.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm involved in a crash with a school bus?
Stop immediately, check on anyone injured, and call 911. Stay at the scene until police arrive, and avoid moving your vehicle unless it's blocking traffic and it's safe to do so.
What injuries are common in these collisions?
Occupants of passenger vehicles usually suffer the more serious injuries, including fractures, head injuries, and whiplash. Bus passengers, who sit higher and are compartmentalized by bus seating, more frequently walk away with minor injuries, though that's not guaranteed.
What usually causes a car-versus-bus crash?
Common factors include a driver failing to stop for an extended stop arm, misjudging the bus's speed or position at an intersection, or distraction near a school zone. The specific cause of any individual crash is typically determined by investigators afterward.
What to Do After a Bus Crash in Jackson Township, PA
If you're involved in or witness a crash involving a school bus, call 911 right away and give dispatchers your exact location. Even if injuries seem minor, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since some injuries like concussions or soft-tissue damage don't show symptoms immediately.
Keep a record of what emergency responders tell you on scene, including any report numbers, and follow up with the responding department if you need documentation later. If your child rides a bus on this route, your school district can usually provide updates on how it's handling the aftermath with families and drivers.
