JASPER, Jasper County, Texas, Nov. 7, 2026 — One person was hurt on Wednesday afternoon, November 4, in a two-vehicle crash on South Wheeler Street in Jasper, according to police.
The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. in the 300 block of South Wheeler Street, also known as Highway 96, in front of a Dollar General store, police said. Two SUVs, a Ford and a Kia, collided at the location, and a Dodge van reportedly had to swerve suddenly to avoid being hit.
Firefighters responding to the scene disconnected the Kia's battery to put out a small fire that had started under the hood, then worked to free the driver and clear the wreckage from the roadway. One person was injured and was later taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said. No other injuries were reported.
Highway 96 was shut down for a period while crews cleared the vehicles, backing up traffic along Wheeler Street. The cause of the crash has not been determined, and police said the investigation is ongoing.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes two-vehicle crashes like this one?
Common factors include following too closely, failing to yield, distraction, or a vehicle entering a lane unexpectedly. Investigators determine the specific cause through witness accounts, vehicle damage, and scene evidence.
Why is distracted driving considered so risky?
Even a brief glance away from the road can prevent a driver from reacting to a stopped or turning vehicle ahead, which is usually enough to cause a collision.
Can a vehicle catch fire after a crash like this?
Yes. A collision can damage wiring, fuel lines, or the engine compartment, sometimes sparking a small fire. Emergency crews usually disconnect the battery quickly to reduce that risk.
What should drivers do if they come upon a crash scene?
Slow down, keep a safe distance from emergency crews and wrecked vehicles, and follow any posted detours or officer directions until the roadway is cleared.
