What Happens When a Vehicle Turns Into the Path of a Semitruck?
Turning movements across or onto roads with active traffic are among the more common causes of serious crashes at rural intersections. A driver making a right turn must judge the speed and distance of approaching vehicles from multiple directions, and a misjudgment with a fast-moving semitruck can leave almost no margin for error. The size and weight of a commercial truck mean it carries significant momentum that is difficult to slow quickly.
When a smaller vehicle is struck by a semitruck and forced off the road, its occupants face a secondary risk of being left on the pavement. Ditches, embankments, and uneven terrain can cause the vehicle to tip, roll, or sustain additional structural damage beyond that caused by the initial collision. Passengers seated in different positions within the vehicle can experience very different levels of force during this sequence.
Intersection crashes on rural county roads are investigated with attention to signage, sight distance, and the presence or absence of traffic control devices. These factors help determine whether road design contributed to the difficulty of making a safe turn and whether either driver had adequate visibility of the other vehicle before the point of contact.
