JOLIET, Will County, Ill., Oct. 16, 2026 — One person was hospitalized after a crash on Thursday morning, October 15, involving five vehicles on westbound Interstate 80 in Joliet. Illinois State Police said the wreck tied up traffic near the interchange with I-55 for hours.

Troopers responded about 5:46 a.m. to the westbound lanes of I-80 at I-55, according to Illinois State Police. The crash involved four passenger vehicles and a semitrailer.

One person was taken to a hospital, authorities said. The extent of that person's injuries has not been released, and it's unclear whether anyone else involved was hurt.

As of 7:36 a.m., the westbound left lane remained open while all other westbound lanes were blocked. It was not immediately clear when all lanes would reopen.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Illinois State Police have not said what role, if any, road or visibility conditions played in how the five vehicles collided.

Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Why Reduced Visibility Can Turn One Crash Into Five

Multi-vehicle pile-ups on interstates like I-80 usually start small. One vehicle slows or stops, and the vehicles behind it don't have enough time or sight distance to react. Fog, smoke, heavy rain, glare from a low morning sun, or even steam rising off wet pavement can cut visibility to a fraction of normal, so a driver going highway speed may not see trouble until they're already on top of it.

Early morning hours add another layer. Traffic is usually moving fast with fewer cars to break up sightlines, and drivers can be less alert than they realize. When one vehicle brakes hard, each driver behind has less time to respond than the one in front, so small following-distance gaps compound down the line. A semitrailer mixed into that chain adds weight and stopping distance that passenger vehicles don't have to contend with.

Once the first impact happens, the blocked lanes themselves become the new hazard. Vehicles arriving seconds later encounter stopped traffic or debris with little warning, especially if visibility is already poor. That's how a single incident becomes a four- or five-vehicle crash before anyone can slow the flow of traffic coming up behind it.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

What typically causes a pile-up involving several vehicles?

Most start with one vehicle stopping or slowing suddenly, usually due to another crash, debris, weather, or heavy traffic. Following vehicles traveling too close or too fast for conditions then strike one another in a chain reaction.

Why do these chain-reaction crashes happen so fast?

At highway speeds, a driver may have only a second or two to react once they see brake lights ahead. Reduced visibility, distraction, or tailgating shrinks that window further, so each vehicle in the line has less time to stop than the one ahead of it.

How can drivers avoid getting caught in one?

Leaving extra following distance, slowing down in fog, rain, or low sun glare, and watching far ahead for brake lights rather than just the car directly in front all help. If traffic is stopping unexpectedly, tapping the brakes early can warn drivers behind you.

What should I do if I come upon a crash scene on the highway?

Slow down well before reaching it, turn on hazard lights to warn traffic behind you, and move into an open lane if it's safe to do so. Avoid stopping in a travel lane unless you're blocked in, since a stopped vehicle in traffic can itself become a hazard.

What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Joliet, IL

If you're involved in or witness a multi-vehicle crash, try to move to a safe spot off the roadway if your vehicle is drivable, and turn on hazard lights. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries before checking on others, and call 911 even if injuries aren't obvious, since some symptoms show up later.

Getting a medical evaluation after any multi-vehicle collision is worth doing even if you feel fine at the scene. Adrenaline can mask pain from whiplash, concussion, or internal injuries for hours or days.

Exchange information with other drivers if it's safe, and take photos of vehicle positions and damage before traffic is cleared, if conditions allow. Keep a copy of the police report once it's available, and follow up with your insurer promptly to start the claims process.
