Joliet, IL (May 6, 2026) – Three people were hospitalized following a serious four-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon at a busy intersection in Joliet.
According to officials, the collision occurred around 4:18 p.m. at Black Road and Essington Road. Joliet police and fire crews responded to the scene and discovered multiple damaged vehicles.
Authorities said one of the vehicles rolled over several times before coming to rest on its roof and catching fire in the engine compartment. An off-duty firefighter who witnessed the crash helped pull the female driver from the overturned vehicle before crews arrived.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, while another driver had to be extricated from a separate vehicle involved in the crash.
In total, three individuals were transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment. The intersection was closed for several hours as police conducted an accident reconstruction investigation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those injured, and we hope for their recovery.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes and Intersection Dangers
Intersections are among the most common locations for multi-vehicle crashes due to the convergence of traffic from multiple directions. Factors such as failure to yield, speeding, and distracted driving can quickly lead to chain-reaction collisions.
When multiple vehicles are involved, the risk of rollover crashes and secondary hazards—such as fires or trapped occupants—increases significantly. Emergency responders often face complex rescue situations that require extrication tools and coordinated efforts.
Drivers are encouraged to approach intersections cautiously, obey traffic signals, and remain alert to surrounding vehicles to help prevent serious collisions.
