JOSHUA TREE, San Bernardino County, Calif., Sept. 27, 2026 — One person suffered minor injuries on Friday morning, September 25, when a two-vehicle crash left an SUV rolled onto its side at Park Boulevard and Alta Mesa Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A black SUV overturned, and a white sedan came to rest nearby after the crash near the intersection. Debris scattered across the roadway, and both vehicles ended up on the shoulder. The driver of the white sedan was reported to be uninjured, while one person involved in the crash was reported with minor injuries, the report said.
Responders closed part of the roadway to clear debris, and a tow truck was requested to remove at least one of the vehicles. The exact cause of the crash has not been released, and it remains unclear how many people were in each vehicle at the time.
The CHP has not released further details on the cause or any citations issued. The collision remains under investigation.
We wish those injured a full recovery.
When Rollover Crashes Are Most Likely to Happen
Rollovers do not follow the same clock as rear-end or intersection crashes. They tend to cluster on rural roads and highway shoulders where speeds are higher, and drivers have more room to overcorrect after drifting off the pavement. Morning and midday hours in areas like the high desert around Joshua Tree can bring sudden gusts of wind, and a strong crosswind can push a lighter vehicle, especially a top-heavy SUV, off its line before a driver reacts.
Weekend and daytime travel on two-lane roads adds another layer of risk, since these roads usually lack a center barrier and give a swerving vehicle nowhere to go but the shoulder or an unpaved edge. That's frequently when a tire catches soft dirt or gravel and the vehicle tips.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 24 percent of fatally injured occupants in crashes classified as other, which were mostly rollovers, were belted in 2023. That figure points to how much a seat belt matters once a vehicle leaves the roadway and begins to roll, regardless of the time of day the crash happens.
Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are common in rollover crashes?
Occupants can suffer head, neck, and spinal injuries, along with broken bones, especially if they are thrown against the roof or side windows as the vehicle turns over.
What causes a vehicle to roll over?
Rollovers usually start when a vehicle drifts off the road, overcorrects, or hits soft shoulder material or debris at speed, causing it to tip onto its side or roof.
Which vehicles are most prone to rollovers?
Taller, narrower vehicles such as SUVs and pickup trucks have a higher center of gravity and are more likely to tip than lower sedans.
What to Do After a Rollover Crash in Joshua Tree, CA
If you're involved in a rollover, stay as still as possible until you can check for injuries, since adrenaline can mask pain at first. If it's safe, turn on hazard lights and move away from traffic and any roadway debris before help arrives.
Seek a medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some, like whiplash or internal bruising, can take hours to show symptoms. Get the names of responding officers and ask how to obtain the official collision report for insurance or records purposes.
