How Head-On Crashes Happen on Rural Highways
Head-on crashes often occur on highways where traffic moves in opposite directions without a physical barrier between lanes. These collisions can happen when a driver drifts across the center line, attempts to pass another vehicle, or loses control.
Many rural highways also have higher speed limits, which can increase the severity of a crash when two vehicles collide from opposite directions. Even a brief lapse in attention can place vehicles directly in each other’s path.
Road conditions, visibility, and driver fatigue may also affect how safely vehicles move along these routes. Because traffic often travels quickly on open highways, drivers are encouraged to stay alert and maintain a safe lane position whenever possible.
