Kansas City, MO (March 18, 2026) – Four people were hurt late on Tuesday night, March 17, in a crash involving a car and a semi on U.S. 71 near 19th Street in downtown Kansas City.
The collision was reported just before midnight in the northbound lanes. Police said a Mercedes S55 traveling at a high rate of speed rear-ended a semi-tractor, causing the truck to spin across two lanes and come to rest on the left shoulder. The Mercedes caught fire in the middle of the highway.
The driver and front-seat passenger of the Mercedes were critically and seriously injured, respectively, and taken to a hospital. The driver and passenger from the semi were also hospitalized, though their injuries were not life-threatening. Portions of the highway were closed for several hours but have since reopened.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Rear-End Collisions with Large Trucks Can Be Severe
Collisions involving smaller vehicles and large trucks can result in significant damage due to the size and weight differences. Rear-end crashes at high speeds often lead to vehicles catching fire, rolling, or being pushed into other lanes, increasing the risk of multiple injuries.
Emergency responders must act quickly to extinguish fires, extract occupants, and provide medical care. Road closures are common in these incidents to allow crews to safely manage the scene and prevent secondary crashes.
Factors such as speed, vehicle size, and road conditions can all influence the severity of injuries and the complexity of clearing the crash site.
