Timelines vary widely. Agencies like DPS typically gather witness statements, review physical evidence and sometimes toxicology results before closing a case, a process that can take weeks or months.
What role does impairment play in fatal crashes?
Alcohol or drug use is a common factor in fatal collisions nationwide, but investigators must confirm it through testing and evidence before attributing a crash to impairment.
Where do fatal crashes most frequently happen?
Head-on collisions like this one frequently occur on undivided two-lane highways, where a vehicle crossing the center line has little space to correct before impact.
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Speed, the angle of impact and whether vehicles have a size or weight mismatch all affect how survivable a crash is, along with how quickly emergency crews can respond.
