Frequently Asked Questions
Why is following distance so important?
Keeping enough space between vehicles gives drivers time to react and stop if traffic ahead slows suddenly, which can prevent a crash from happening or lessen its severity.
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. A crash that blocks lanes or slows traffic can cause additional collisions if approaching drivers don't notice it in time, which is one reason crews work to clear or divert traffic quickly.
What makes multi-vehicle crashes hard to investigate?
Investigators usually have to sort through multiple drivers' accounts, vehicle positions, and damage patterns to determine the sequence of impacts and who did what before the collision.
What causes multi-vehicle pile-ups?
Common factors include sudden braking, reduced visibility, following too closely, and road conditions that make it hard for trailing drivers to stop in time.
